Job Classification: Full-Time Firefighter-EMT, Entry-Level, and Lateral

Position Overview:
The Firefighter-EMT role involves responding to emergency situations and natural conditions that pose a threat to life and property. Duties include firefighting (structural, vehicle, and marine), general rescue, emergency medical technician activities, hazmat response, equipment maintenance, fire prevention programs, and public education. Firefighter-EMTs work under the direction of a commanding officer.

Completed City of Burlington PHI packet
City of Burlington application
Copies of applicable certificates, including EMT-B or higher
Valid NTN CPAT within 30 days of accepting a conditional offer
Entry-Level Candidates:
Must hold a valid National Registry or Washington State EMT-B certificate or higher. All entry-level candidates and some lateral candidates must attend the Washington State Fire Training Academy (FTA) for approximately 12 weeks after hire. A valid CPAT must be obtained within 30 days of accepting a conditional offer. Entry-level applicants are required to take the written NTN assessment test.

Lateral Candidates:
Must have 24 months of full-time employment as a paid FF-EMT in the last 36 months. Firefighter I certification is required at hire, with the expectation to obtain IFSAC FF II within one year of the hire date. Lateral candidates are not required to take the written NTN assessment test. Graduates from an accredited or City of Burlington-approved FTA will not need to attend the Washington State FTA after hire.

Completed application packets must be submitted via mail or in person to Burlington City Hall, ATTN: Human Resources, or emailed by no later than 5:00 p.m. PST on September 3, 2024. Only applicants meeting the minimum job qualifications will be considered.

Qualifications:

High School Diploma or GED required
Must be 21 years of age by the application closing date
Must be a United States citizen
Must be able to read, write, and speak English
Good physical condition and ability to pass the physical agility test
Passing score on respirator medical questionnaire and medical evaluation
Pass a physical examination, including a pre-employment drug screen
Submit to a background investigation prior to being hired
No felony convictions or disqualifying criminal history as defined in City Policy
Must have a valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record
Must obtain a State of Washington driver's license within six months of hire date
Lateral candidates must hold a current IFSAC or equivalent Firefighter I (Firefighter II preferred) certificate
All applicants must hold a current National Registry or Washington State EMT-B certificate
Subject to a 12-month probationary period
Spanish language skills preferred
